Digital photography and color

John Lam is talking about digital photography work flow... I can totally agree with the fact that color matching is such a huge pain. I worked in a tee-shirt shop for a while and the on screen colors of the Mac was so far off from what eventually was on the custom designed shirts (printed from the mac to a color laser printer with thermal transfer paper that was then pressed on the shirt) that we had to have a color swatch and try to talk customers out of believe what was on the screen.

At home, I continue to have problems with printing my pictures. Every Photoshop book that I read devotes about 25% of the book to color. Experts at Microsoft that I have talked to have gone into great depths as to the root cause of all these problems - however it is apparent that today getting accurate color between the camera, screen, and printer is basically impossible for a mere mortal like myself.

Luminous Landscape (Joe point this site out) has a great writeup on the new Canon 1Ds where they talk about what the future of digital photography is about... and it isn't lots of new pixels.

Photography

So i really enjoy taking pictures, but have not gone out shooting for a while. I'm really trying to get better, but I haven't yet taken any classes. I shoot with a Canon D30 and primarily use a Canon 24-85 3.5-4.5 lens. Of course, the real lens that I want is a Canon 70-300 IS L lens... just can't pony up the dough for a hobby.

I shot about 7,500 pictures last year, almost 2,500 of which I took in a 3 week period when I went to Spain and the San Juan islands in Washington. I'm trying to make up in quantity what I can't do with quality.

You can check out some pictures that I submitted to PhotoSig. I'll try to post some samples on my 'blog, although I don't want to bog down Brian's server.
